Climate Crisis

This is my climate crisis page. Here I have resources to help address it.

Media

I wrote a short article compelling all publishers to commit to climate content. Web site operators should create or link to a page with information on how to help with the climate crisis; this link should be visible anywhere on the site. Podcasts and YouTube channels should dedicate a few seconds at the end of each show.

If you have any kind of media presence. Use it.

Benefits of Reducing Consumption

Here is an interesting interview with Vicki Robin by Mad Fientist. Vicki is co-author of Your Money or Your Life and an early and influential figure in the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. In the interview she speaks about attending a sustainable development conference in 1989 that inspired her to write the book. The take away is we have known that our current levels of consumption aren’t sustainable for more than 30 years. In short, FIRE is achieved by saving money via greatly reduced consumption and investing the difference. The reduced consumption also means less greenhouse gas emissions.

You can save money and reduce emissions by adopting some of the things people on the FIRE track do.

Political Action

According to this MSNBC article and this nature article, measures to address the climate crisis are popular enough that elected officials shouldn’t worry about losing their seats for using their power to take action. Please contact your local elected officials and ensure they are aware of this.

If you are an elected official, some of the things that you can do have other benefits. Strong Towns is a great resource. For example, this article on how walkable areas are great for business as well as cleaner due to less motor vehicle usage. The YouTube channel Not Just Bikes has a great video series explaining Strong Towns. Here is a link to the first one.

Individual Actions

One individual taking action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions won’t make much of a difference. Three billion individuals will.

  • Eat less beef.
  • Buy used and long lasting products.
  • Fly less.
  • Participate in local politics.
  • Get Informed.
  • Drive less.
  • Consider adopting a FIRE like lifestyle.
  • Work from home if possible.
  • Discuss the crisis. Get others to act.
